Here or there?

I’ve always wanted to travel and I have been able to travel in the past, but now that I am really thinking about what I want I realize that a job where there is a little bit of travel is ideal for me. I want to see the world and, hey, why not get paid to do so, right? I’m not saying I would want to be traveling 75% of the time but traveling here and there is super appealing to me. I want to be able to learn about other places and I have even thought about what it would be like to live in other states. I’ve often researched jobs in other cities and states outside of the southern California area, but never have found one that I would ultimately pick up and move for. One of my dreams has always been to live in New York City for a year or so, but I would definitely settle for a career that allowed me to travel there or even the east coast in general. It’s crazy what I consider now and that it could actually be reality if I find the perfect job. But until then I will just stay here…

Preparing for an Interview

So after the efforts of this class and pursuing a career in marketing, I am pleased to say I have an interview tomorrow for a marketing position. The reason for even getting the interview was solely because of social media. A friend of mine saw one of her friends post a status on Facebook about her company looking for marketing people to join the team, and my friend thought of me. It was the first time that I had really seen social media at its best when it came to networking and job search related things, especially Facebook. I am beyond ecstatic to say the least. But with every interview preparation comes the nerves and so I begin my night before an interview prep work to ensure I have the best chances with this marketing position.

In my line of business at the Disneyland Resort, we have these things called Walks. What they really are are time that our managers and our leads take out of their day to do a walk through the park together and talk. We talk about life goals and where we want to go in the company, but we also just get to know each other better. Recently I have been really thinking about what my next steps are and I have been on a couple of Walks with two different managers. Both have given me great incite and advice on how to advance and things to think about as the summer progresses. A good walk can definitely renew your sense of pride in your job and spark interest in the future when it seems like a dying light.

Social Media Conversations

It’s a strangely cool and interesting thing to have a conversation with different companies on a social media site. I have done it a few times, but this past week I had the pleasure of conversing with American Airlines via Twitter. I had tweeted something about a great interaction I had with one of their employees and they replied to me wanting to know the details so they could pass on the good word to their employee. It was awesome to be able to put in a compliment via Twitter. It amazes me every time that I could literally talk to anyone I wanted to with social media. The world literally is our oyster if we make it so. It was encouraging to know that social media is what you make of it, and if you make it awesome, it can be a great tool for connections.

The Path

Everyone has a path, or at least that is what “they” tell us when we are deciding what it is that we want to do with the rest of our lives. There is this path that we walk along to get to where we end up, but really when do we ever end? I walk along my path deciding what it truly is that I want to do with my career and even in my life in general. I have jumped and skipped along different paths for years and have only in the past couple years really figured out even the subject of my career path. Entertainment marketing is where I want to go, but how do I get there. This is the struggle I have had with my path. There are so many different aspects of entertainment marketing that I would love to learn and try and it makes it very hard to figure out where to start. I know that once I even get there, my path will suddenly grow and I will then be seeking more and more. I am a learner. I love to learn new things and grow. I am constantly trying to figure out the next thing I can do to improve and to develop in myself. The path is the journey we all take, by no means is it the end result in any sense of the word. It is as if fog is at the end of the path and really we only see what we can see up ahead, but there is so much more to offer and as we walk closer we see more developing.

The Worlds Around Me

As I work for the Walt Disney Company, who uses social media very effectively, I realize the branches of opportunity I have with the company. Not only can I network with thousands of people, even on a daily basis, but also I am constantly learning things in all different kinds of lines of business. I have the ability to work in my department, yet still learn tips and tricks for food services, attraction operations, stores operations, and even security. That is something not every job can provide. So my goal this summer is to learn as much as I can, report about it (with the details I can provide), and grow exponentially as I seek out my career in the field I love most, entertainment marketing.

Sports Blogs

While each team has their own website to report stats and information about their players, there are those other sites that report and comment on the players, teams, and everything else having to do with sports. Those in the sports marketing industry rely on all the different websites to see what to market and where. is one of those sites. This site contains podcasts, blogs by every commentator, and stats that comprise all sports. Many sports enthusiasts go to these types of sites to communicate with other sports lovers and for the insider information that maybe the official team website won’t leak out. The more viewers go to sites like, the more official teams and clothing supporters will want to advertise and market on these websites.
